How Often Should You Clean Your Pool Filter?

Pool owners know that properly maintaining their pools is important to keeping the condition of the pool at a high level. One type of maintenance that needs to be performed regularly is the cleaning of the pool filter. Regular pool filter cleaning will preserve the life of the internals and allow for better circulation of pool water. Here are some things you need to know about cleaning your pool’s filter.

How Often Should You Clean Your Pool Filter?

Cartridge Filters

Depending on what type of filter you have, you will need to keep a schedule for when to initiate a cleaning. For cartridge filters, a clean every six weeks can go a long way in keeping your pool in good shape, but a clean every four months is generally the recommended amount of time. A cartridge filter that is not cleaned regularly will not operate efficiently and you may notice too much flow going through the filter. When a cartridge filter passes too much water too quickly, it can decrease the cartridge lifespan.

D.E. Filters

Another pool filter type are D.E. filters. You should be backwashing your pool’s D.E. filter at least once two to three weeks. The D.E. in the name stands for diatomaceous earth, which is the substance that provides the filtration. Once every four months or so, a D.E. filter needs to be dismantled and a deep clean needs to be performed to maintain effective filtration. After a deep cleaning, more D.E. powder needs to be added. D.E. filters are much more complicated filters than cartridge filters, but when proper maintenance is performed, they can be the superior option.
