Are Your Pool Chemicals Doing Their Job?

When you think of swimming in your backyard pool with your family, many thoughts come to mind, such as sun, laughter, splashing, or exercise. Harmful bacteria lurking in your pool water shouldn’t be one of the first things you think about when you are ready to take a dip, assuming your pool chemicals are doing their job. Not sure your chemical levels are on point? Here are several warning signs:

Are Your Pool Chemicals Doing Their Job?

  • Cloudy Water – Ideally, your pool water should be crystal clear, so that you can clearly see all the way to the bottom of your swimming pool. Cloudy water may be a sign that the chemicals need to be adjusted, or may mean that your filter is malfunctioning or needing to be replaced.
  • Slimy Water – Slimy water may be caused by an overabundance of algae, or the presence of many types of fecal borne bacteria. However, chlorine, which is a common pool chemical, also possesses a slimy feel, so the problem may be a direct result of using too much chlorinating chemicals, rather than not enough. Only a proper diagnostic test can help you know the difference.
  • Film or Scum on the Surface – The presence of a white film or scum on the surface of your pool could be a result of bathers using too much sunscreen, tanning oil, or body lotion, or could be a sign that your filter is malfunctioning, your pump is not running enough, or your water is too soft. Occasionally, if the chemicals in your pool become out of balance, it might be necessary to shock your pool to restore safe and healthy chemical levels.
